MoF issues warning against using AI tools/apps in Office Devices
The Ministry of Finance has issued a warning against the use of AI tools like ChatGPT, DeepSeek, etc. on office computers and devices due to risks to confidentiality of govt data and documents. The MoF notified this via issuing an internal advisory.
Three officials from India's finance ministry confirmed the advisory's legitimacy, according to the report. This comes as AI tools continue to be scrutinised in many countries.
The Advisory Read as Follows:
It has been determined that Al tools and Al apps (such as ChatGPT, DeepSeek etc.) in the office computers and devices pose risks for confidentiality of Govt data and documents.
It is, therefore, advised that use of Al tools/Al apps in office devices may be strictly avoided. This may be brought to the notice of all employees.
This issues with the approval of Finance Secretary.
Why the ban on usage of AI tools/apps?
The government's restriction on AI tools comes shortly before OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's planned visit to India on 5th February, during which he will meet with IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The visit coincides with India's ambitious push into artificial intelligence through the recently established IndiaAI Mission, which has received a government allocation of Rs.10,371 crore over five years. The OpenAI CEO's visit to India is part of a larger worldwide trip that also includes stops in Japan, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, Germany and France. This is Altman's second journey to India, following his initial visit in June 2023 to meet with Prime Minister Modi to discuss AI policies. According to reports, Altman will also meet with top venture capital investors during his visit to Delhi, including executives from Peak XV Partners and Accel. OpenAI has come under increased scrutiny in India, including a high-profile copyright infringement case involving major media outlets. The company has claimed in court filings that its servers are not in India and that Indian courts should not have jurisdiction over the subject.About Author
