A magisterial inquiry was started on Sunday into the death of a police officer immediately after his detention by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on fraud accusations in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district, according to officials.

Head constable Mushtaq Ahmad, a Billawar resident, was allegedly caught red-handed on Saturday while accepting a bribe of 3,000 at the Kathua women’s police station, few hours before his death.

“We have started the magisterial enquiry into the death of the cop on the directives of the Kathua deputy commissioner and will submit our findings in the shortest feasible time,” said additional deputy commissioner Vishav Partap Singh.

In charge of leading the magisterial investigation, Singh oversaw the deceased’s autopsy on Sunday at the Government Medical College and Hospital. After the formalities were finished, the deceased’s body was given to his family for final rites, according to officials.

The deceased policeman’s wife and two children were also present, along with his family and neighbours, who requested that a FIR be filed against the CBI in relation to his death.

He appeared to be caught up in a bogus case and was a gentleman. The deceased’s neighbour and sarpanch Sanjiv Kumar told reporters that even if we assume that he was discovered accepting a bribe, that does not imply he should have been probed in a manner that resulted in his death.

He questioned the silence of the agency over the death of the cop and urged the Lt Governor Manoj Sinha and government to ensure “justice to the family of the deceased”.

Shakti Kumar Pathak, Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Jammu-Samba-Kathua range, stated that the police had begun an inquest into the matter.

“The death occurred during this process, and it was a CBI trap. He fainted and was carried to the hospital by a police team, where the medics pronounced him dead”, he added.
