The Income Tax Department noted a record number of filings of Income Tax Returns (ITRs) until October 31, 2023, which was the due date for filing ITRs (other than ITR 7) for taxpayers who did not have any international or specified domestic transactions, and whose books of account were required to be audited.

More than 7.65 crore ITRs were filed for AY 2023-24 through October 31, 2023, which is 11.7% higher as compared to the 6.85 crore ITRs filed for AY 2022-23 till 7th November 2022, the due date for filing such ITRs the previous year. Furthermore, the total number of ITRs filed in FY 2023-24 for all assessment years up to October 31, 2023, is 7.85 crore, a record high when compared to 7.78 crore ITRs filed in FY 2022-23.

More than 7.51 crore ITRs have already been confirmed out of the 7.65 crore ITRs filed for AY 23-24. Furthermore, 7.19 crore of the 7.51 crore validated ITRs have already been processed as of October 31, 2023, representing nearly 96% of the confirmed ITRs.

The deadline for filing various important statutory forms, such as Forms 10B, 10BB, and 3CEB, was also October 31, 2023. More than 1.44 crore statutory forms of various categories have been filed as of October 31, 2023.

During peak filing days, the e-filing platform effectively managed the traffic, providing taxpayers and tax experts with a flawless experience when filing Forms and ITRs. This was enthusiastically praised by taxpayers and experts across multiple venues, including social media.

Taxpayers received assistance from the helpdesk via inbound and outbound calls, live chats, Webex, and co-browsing sessions. The helpdesk team also assisted in the resolution of queries received on the Department’s Twitter handle using Online Response Management (ORM), by proactively reaching out to taxpayers/stakeholders and aiding them with various difficulties in near real-time.

To assist taxpayers and tax professionals, eight webinars on auditable and time-barring forms, ITR-3/5/6 filing, DSC registration, form 10B/10BB filing, and other topics were held. Educational videos on the subject were also posted on the e-filing platform.

The IT Department extends gratitude to all taxpayers and tax professionals for their assistance in compliance and urges taxpayers who have yet to file Forms and ITRs to do so. The Department encourages all taxpayers and tax professionals to continue to file tax returns on time.
