RBI says 98.08% of Rs.2000 notes returned; Banknotes worth Rs.6,839 crore still in Circulation

RBI has announced that 98.08% of the Rs.2,000 banknotes in circulation have been returned. However, the currency notes that remain in circulation are still considered legal tender.

RBI says 98.08% of Rs.2000 notes returned; Banknotes worth Rs.6,839 crore still in Circulation The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced that 98.08% of the Rs.2,000 banknotes in circulation have been returned. However, the currency notes that remain in circulation are still considered legal tender. RBI announced the withdrawal of Rs.2000 banknotes from circulation in Press Release 2023-2024/257 on May 19, 2023. The RBI periodically publishes the status of withdrawal of Rs.2000 banknotes. The last press statement in this regard was issued on November 4, 2024. The Rs.2,000 banknotes were launched in November 2016, following the demonetization of the Rs.1,000 and Rs.500 notes. The facility for deposit and / or exchange of the Rs.2000 banknotes was available at all bank branches in the country upto October 07, 2023. The facility for exchange of the Rs.2000 banknotes is available at the 19 Issue Offices of the Reserve Bank (RBI Issue Offices)1 since May 19, 2023. From October 09, 2023, RBI Issue Offices are also accepting Rs.2000 banknotes from individuals / entities for deposit into their bank accounts. Further, members of the public are sending Rs.2000 banknotes through India Post from any post office within the country, to any of the RBI Issue Offices for credit to their bank accounts.
