CBI Cracks Rs 20 Lakh Bribe Case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested three people in connection with an alleged Rs 20 lakh bribery case involving officials of the Punjab Vigilance Department. One of the accused is still absconding, and efforts are underway to arrest him.
The arrests were made after a complaint by a Punjab State Tax Officer. He alleged that the accused demanded a bribe to help close a complaint pending against him with the Director General Vigilance, Punjab.
According to the CBI, two of the accused, who are from Malout in Muktsar district, were allegedly working as middlemen for senior Vigilance officials, including the Reader to the DGP Vigilance. They allegedly told the complainant that the case could be settled if he paid the demanded bribe.
The CBI is now investigating whether more people were involved in the alleged corruption network. The agency had earlier raided the Punjab Vigilance Bureau office in Mohali late last night.
Punjab Vigilance Bureau sources said the department will fully cooperate with the CBI investigation. They added that appropriate legal action will be taken if any official is found to be involved.
