SC Rejects Multiple Income Tax Appeals After Comprehensive Hearing on Merits A batch of civil appeals that had been pending for almost ten years finally came up for hearing before the Supreme Court of India. The cases involved several taxpayers who were challenging income tax assessments that had already been upheld by the lower authorities and the respective High Courts. Since the matters revolved around similar questions on tax liability and interpretation of provisions under the Income Tax Act, they were grouped together and heard collectively.

These disputes had travelled through multiple stages of litigation over the years, with the appellants continuing to contest the conclusions reached against them. Given the common thread running through all the cases, the Court examined them together in detail before arriving at a final view.

Issue Raised: Whether the findings of lower courts on income tax assessments required interference.

SC Decided: The Supreme Court of India dismissed the entire batch of appeals, finding no substance in the arguments put forward by the appellants. After going through the records and hearing both sides at length, the Court was of the view that the conclusions reached by the lower authorities and the High Courts were sound and did not warrant any interference.

The Court also took note of the prolonged pendency of these matters and observed that no substantial question of law remained for consideration. With this, all the connected appeals and pending applications were closed, effectively bringing a long-drawn litigation to an end. To Read Full Judgment, Download PDF Given Below
