Finance Minister informed the Rajya Sabha that central tax authorities have booked 12,803 cases of GST evasion and arrested 101 people in Gujarat over the last 4 FY.

Tax Official registered 12,803 GST Evasion Cases in Gujarat in last 4 Years; 101 Accused Arrested

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman informed the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday that central tax authorities have booked 12,803 cases of GST evasion and arrested 101 people in Gujarat over the last four financial years.

“In the State of Gujarat, during Financial Year 2021-22 to 2024-25 (up to 31.10.2024), the number of GST evasion cases booked by Central Tax formations is 12,803,” according to Sitharaman.

In those such cases, three FIRs were registered under the IPC (now Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023), and eight people were named in these FIRs, according to the minister in response to a question about the number of cases of GST evasion detected in Gujarat over the last three years, up to October 30, 2024.

However, 101 individuals have been arrested in GST evasion charges under Section 69 of the CGST Act, 2017.

In response to a separate question in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary provided details on GST collections over the last five financial years.

In 2023-24, the gross GST collection stood at Rs.20.18 lakh crore. Refunds totalling Rs.2.08 lakh crore were issued. In 2022-23, gross GST revenue was Rs.18.08 lakh crore, with refunds totalling Rs.2.20 lakh crore.

The gross collections for 2021-22 and 2020-21 were Rs.14.83 lakh crore and Rs.11.37 lakh crore respectively. Over the course of two years, refunds totalling Rs.1.83 lakh crore and Rs.1.25 lakh crore were issued.

In the current financial year (April-October), gross GST collection was Rs.12.74 lakh crore, with refunds of Rs.1.47 lakh crore issued. Net GST collection totalled Rs.11.27 lakh.
