Understanding the Difference between UPSC and UPPSC: A Comparative Analysis

In India, the Union Public Service Commision (UPSC) and the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commision (UPPSC) are two prestigious organizations in charge of national and state civil services examinations, respectively. While both attempt to choose applicants for administrative posts, they have considerable variances. This article compares the UPSC and UPPSC, noting their differences in terms of jurisdiction, selection process, and administrative responsibilities.

The most fundamental distinction between the UPSC and the UPPSC is their jurisdiction. The UPSC is a national constitutional organization formed under Article 315 of the Indian Constitution. It administers exams for all-India services such as the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), the Indian Police Service (IPS), and the Indian Foreign Service (IFS). The UPSC serves the entire country and is in charge of central civil service postings.

The UPPSC, on the other hand, is a state-level commission constituted by Article 315 of the Indian Constitution. It operates inside the state of Uttar Pradesh and conducts tests for several state-level services such as the Uttar Pradesh Civil Services, Provincial Civil Services, and other affiliated services. The UPPSC is specifically responsible for appointments to administrative jobs within the state government of Uttar Pradesh.

Selection Process: The UPSC and UPPSC examination selection processes differ in some ways. The UPSC examination is divided into three stages: the preliminary exam (objective type), the main exam (descriptive type), and the interview (personality test). Candidates who pass all three levels are chosen for a variety of distinguished national services.

Similarly, the UPPSC test is divided into two parts: the preliminary exam (objective type) and the main exam (descriptive type). Unlike the UPSC, however, the UPPSC adds an optional topic in the mains test, which has a major weightage in the final selection. Candidates who pass the preliminary and main exams are invited to an interview, after which the final selection is made.

Administrative tasks: Based on their jurisdiction, the UPSC and UPPSC have various administrative tasks. The UPSC is in charge of choosing applicants for all-India services such as the IAS, IPS, and IFS. These officers operate in various roles at the central government level and are in charge of national policymaking, implementation, and administrative functions.

In contrast, the UPPSC selects candidates for administrative positions inside the Uttar Pradesh state government. These officers play an important role in state government and administration, implementing state-level policies, and addressing Uttar Pradesh’s unique requirements and issues.
