Zomato claimed in a regulatory filing that the demand order was received in connection with GST dues on delivery charges, including interest and penalties. The food aggregator has stated that it will file an appeal with the relevant authority, believing it has a good case. "Company has received an order on 12 December 2024 for the period 29 October 2019 to 31 March 2022 passed by Joint Commissioner of CGST & Central Excise, Thane Commissionerate, Maharashtra, confirming demand of GST of Rs 401,70,14,706 with interest as applicable and penalty of Rs 401,70,14,706," according to Zomato. "We feel we have a good case on merits, supported by the opinions of our external legal and tax consultants. The company will file an appeal against the order with the proper authorities," it said. Meanwhile, Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal, who frequently makes headlines for his strange posts and statements, recently posted that the company is looking for a Chief of Staff, stating that the individual chosen must pay Rs.20 lakh to the company to secure the job. He later clarified that, despite receiving over 18,000 applications, he never intended to charge individuals for the job. "This wasn't just another job posting. As several people pointed out, the 'you have to pay us 20 lacs (sic) was only a filter, to locate those who had the power to appreciate the potential of a fast track career, without being limited by restraints in front of them," Goyal said.
