ICAI released Audit Working Paper Templates; Know Details

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has released Audit Working Paper Templates. These Audit Working Paper Templates are only for illustration purposes. Members are asked to make appropriate changes based on the facts, circumstances, and nature of the company under audit.

This document neither supersedes nor replaces any ICAI Guidance/ Pronouncements/ Standards. Members are encouraged to study or utilise the Audit Working Paper Templates in accordance with the appropriate ICAI Standards. Members should also use their professional discretion when using the Audit Working Paper Templates.

The ICAI’s Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (AASB) has been taking different initiatives to assist members in performing successful audit engagements. To keep members up to date, the Board organises frequent training programmes (seminars, workshops, conferences, and webinars) on auditing standards and other auditing topics. Another significant activity for information distribution and increasing awareness about the Standards is the publication of Implementation Guides for specific Auditing Standards. The Board also publishes auditing technical literature, such as information Notes and Technical Guides, to offer members with information on both generic and industry-specific auditing challenges.

The publication contains templates of various audit working papers which are required to be prepared by auditors during the course of their audit assignment in accordance with the requirements of Standards on Auditing. The publication also contains templates of other important audit working papers e.g. Schedule III of Companies Act 2013 checklist, CARO 2020 checklist.

Audit work papers are an essential part of the statutory audit process. They are a written record of the audit processes, results, and conclusions reached by the auditor. The principles that auditors should follow while generating audit documentation are outlined in Standard on Auditing (SA) 230, “Audit Documentation.”

Auditors must provide adequate and suitable audit material to support their audit opinion under SA 230. This standard offers general recommendations on the form, substance, and scope of audit documentation, as well as the assembly of the final audit file.

In addition to numerous statutory obligations, the standard requires auditors to record their compliance with auditing standards and to provide a final audit file that contains all audit documentation. The standard emphasises the significance of audit documentation as proof that the audit was planned and carried out in line with the Standards on Auditing and any legal and regulatory obligations.

Audit work papers should include a variety of information, such as the audit plan, audit procedures undertaken, the outcomes of those processes, and the conclusions reached by the auditor, in addition to recording professional judgement and the reasons for that judgement. There are several significant benefits to maintaining a proper audit file. First and foremost, audit work papers give documentation of work performed as well as the foundation for the auditor’s assessment.

Proper audit work papers help the auditor or reviewer to gain confidence that the quality of the audit was up to the mark if a record of the audit procedures is maintained along with the evidence. Other advantages of audit work papers are:

  • Auditors will be able to demonstrate that the audit was performed in accordance with standards on auditing.
  • Audit work papers also serve as a reference point for future audits.
  • Audit work papers also facilitate communication among the engagement team members. They provide a common reference point to discuss their findings, conclusions and issues involved.

Audit Working Paper Templates

These templates are intended to assist in ensuring that audit work documents are consistently organised and written, making it easier for audit professionals or audit firms to organise and document the procedures done. This will aid in introducing uniformity and making audit files easier to prepare for auditors. This can also assist auditors save time by adding structure to audit work documents, allowing them to be more efficient and minimise the time necessary.

There may be some overlap in work paper templates, which has been retained for the document’s convenience. These templates must be utilised in consideration of the size and complexity of the company under audit, and experts may use their discretion if any changes to a specific work document are required.
