A 58-year-old housekeeper, Rani Babu from Ambur is upset after receiving a GST notice for Rs.2.39 crore from the Commercial Taxes Department, Palakkarai Assessment Circle, Tiruchy, on Saturday. She works for a leather company and earns a salary of Rs.9,000 per month. She and her grandchildren live in a rented house in Krishnavaram. Her son, B Shankar (40), works for a shoe sole manufacturing company and earns only Rs 9,000 per month.

The mother and he son stated they wanted to file a complaint with the Superintendent of Police in Tirupattur. The notice identifies Rani as the owner of Modern Enterprises, which operates from “1/81, Malaipatti Manapparai Road, Kallikudy North, Tiruchi, with GSTIN 33FEPPR4120N1Z1”.

A number of cases took place in Ambur and Vaniyambadi in which Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, and bank accounts of daily wage earners and housewives are being exploited to run businesses to evade GST. Tirupattur SP Shreya Gupta informed that the district crime branch is investigating the cases in collaboration with the cybercrime wing.

“We have yet to receive a complaint on Rani’s case. Once we do, we will begin our investigation,” she stated.

Regarding comparable incidents, Gupta stated, “Some cases are four to five years old, therefore investigation takes time. We must find high-volume transactions and work backwards. In one case, there were fifty suspects. This is being done by several people, not just one organization. We expect to resolve one case within a month.”

A district cyber crime wing officer stated, “It is tough to investigate because the email addresses, phone numbers, and bank accounts associated with the company frequently belong to various individuals. Furthermore, in certain cases, affected people might have willingly submitted their information and agreed on a specified amount with the person starting the company. When the company fails and they do not receive their part, they file a complaint.”

According to officials, such crimes frequently occur when persons like Rani disclose their personal information to those promised monetary benefits through community welfare schemes. They stated that because GST registration is totally online, anyone can easily misuse these details.
