Operation Chakra-V: Four Arrested by CBI in ‘Digital Arrest’ Case
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested four individuals, two each from Moradabad and Mumbai, for their involvement in the Digital Arrest case. These accused were held during a search operation at 12 different locations under Chakra-V.
There have been many cases of Digital Arrests in recent months, where the cybercriminals pretend to be police or law officials and trap people into thinking they are in legal trouble. CBI took over one of the digital arrest cases at the request of the Rajasthan government. It was previously registered at the Cyber Police Station Jhunjhunu.
In this case, a person from Rajasthan was digitally detained online for over 3 months and was forced to send money 42 times, totalling Rs. 7.67 crores.
After taking over the case, CBI did a deep investigation through available data and profiles of suspects. CBI used advanced investigation techniques to find the criminals. It conducted research across 12 locations in Moradabad and Sambhal in UP, Mumbai, Jaipur, and Krishnanagar in West Bengal, where it arrested four persons who were involved in this crime.
CBI also recovered some substantial material, including the bank account information, cheque books, debit cards, deposit slips, and digital devices/evidence.
The four arrested people were presented before the Competent court and have been sent to five days of police custody. The CBI says it will continue its efforts to track down such cybercriminals.
