In a recent shocking case, a home decor company in Greater Noida has accused its accountant of taking away Rs. 1.80 crore by misusing the company’s GST portal and submitting fake invoices, according to police reports shared on Monday. The fraud was discovered in July 2025, during a financial audit by the owner of the company, a 32-year-old woman.

The fraud is claimed to have happened between December 2024 and March 2025. The accused, Abhinav Tyagi, had been employed with the company for around five years and had full access to its financial data and GST login credentials during that time.

During the audit, the chartered accountant found that fake invoices amounting to Rs. 10 crore had been uploaded on the GST portal using the company’s name. These fake invoices were connected to seven different companies, which are all suspected to be non-existent and bogus. The accused allegedly claimed tax benefits by uploading these fake invoices.

When the fraud was discovered, the owner changed the GST credentials and tried to reach out to the accused accountant about the unpaid GST and fake invoices. However, the owner claimed that the accountant threatened the company owner and then stopped all contact with her.

The owner filed a police complaint at the Cybercrime Branch in Greater Noida. A case has been registered under sections of cheating, forgery, impersonation, criminal intimidation, and relevant parts of the Information Technology (IT) Act and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Due to the accused’s fraud, the company is now liable to pay Rs 1.80 crore to the GST department. The GST department is also investigating the case and is tracing the accused accountant.
