Budget 2026: Indian Railways Utilisation of Budget Funds Rises to 80.54% in December 2025
The Ministry of Railways has shared that the Indian Railways has spent 80.54% of its total gross budgetary money of Rs 2,52,200 crore by the end of December 2025. The ministry further shared that this is a 6.54% increase in the spending as compared to the utilisation in December 2024. Most of the money was used for safety upgrades, modern updates, and to improve the passenger amenities.
The Railways Ministry has said that a huge part of the fund of around 84% that is given under the Gross Budgetary Support (GBS) has already been used. For Projects that increase the capacity, the Railways have recorded 69% utilisation by spending around Rs 76,048 crore out of the allocated fund of Rs 1,09,238 crore. On the Other hand, for the customer amenities, around 80% of the allotted fund has been used, amounting to Rs 9,575 crore until December 2025.
As per the officials, the Indian Railways is growing faster to offer safer and faster rail travel at affordable prices. Officials say that the strong use of GBS shows a clear plan to create a strong and well-connected rail network across the country.
The increase in spending over the last ten years has resulted in major improvements across the railway sector. The ministry highlighted several key achievements, including the launch of 164 Vande Bharat trains and 30 Amrit Bharat trains. The railway sector has also focused on the safety of passengers with the use of the Kavach automatic train protection system on many routes. Indian Railways has also electrified more than 99% of its broad-gauge tracks.
All these efforts have improved train speed, safety and passenger comfort, while keeping ticket prices affordable for most people. The upcoming Vande Bharat Sleeper trains are expected to improve long-distance travel and offer better facilities to passengers.
The ministry said the current spending pace shows that GBS utilisation plans for this financial year are moving well. Infrastructure work is also improving, and Indian Railways is confident of meeting its goals for the Financial Year 2025-26.
