Small Farmer Shocked After Receiving Rs 2.47 Crore GST Demand Notice

A farmer who is 32 years old and lives in a small village called Mottur near Gudiyatham in the Vellore district received a shocking GST notice from the assistant commissioner (Ambur circle) asking him to pay Rs 2.47 crore in tax, including interest and penalties for the financial year 2023 to 2024.

The farmer whose name is S. Prabhakar, son of Selvaraj, who lives in a tin-roofed house, claimed that he earns his living through small-scale farming and cattle-rearing.

After receiving the notice, he immediately contacted the Ambur GST assistant commissioner’s office and claimed that he does not own any business named ‘Raju Traders’ and it is potentially identity theft.

Officials advised him to file a complaint to address the matter, after which he filed a police complaint regarding the matter with Paradarami police.

In the complaint, he had clearly said, “I am a simple labourer living in a house with a metal sheet roof. I can’t conduct business worth crores of rupees. Someone has illegally obtained my personal documents to fraudulently register this GST number. The incident has caused severe mental agony and distress to my entire family and me. I am deeply worried that I might be held legally responsible for financial irregularities committed by someone else using my identity.”

He had been assured by the police that they would find the culprit and know how the culprit got access to his personal documents.
