Appeal Made to FM Nirmala Sitharaman for Extension of Tax Filing Deadlines A taxpayer has recently shared a letter he sent to the Union Minister of Finance (Government of India), Nirmala Sitharaman, on platform X. In the letter, the taxpayer was requesting an extension of the Due dates for filing ITR and TAR for the Assessment year 2025-26. He added on behalf of all taxpayers and experts, 'We respectfully request your kind consideration for extending the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) and Tax Audit Reports (TARs) for the Assessment Year 2025-26.'

He mentioned the following difficulties that are being faced by the taxpayers this year: 1. Flood in Punjab and other states: Recent floods and heavy rains have caused problems in their normal life and significantly affected taxpayers and professionals. 2. Delay in Release of ITR Forms and Utilities: The ITR forms and utilities were released late this year, leaving less time for preparation and filing of returns for the taxpayers. 3. Regular updation of Form 26AS and AIS: The continuous revisions and updates in Form 26AS and AIS need repeated reconciliations, which also cause delays in finalising correct information for filing.

4. Detailed information and disclosure requirements: The ITR filing requires more details and disclosures as compared to the last year. Due to this, taxpayers need more time and effort to ensure the information is correct. 5. Capital gain bifurcation reporting: For this Assessment Year, capital gains are required to be reported separately for two different periods for tax calculation purposes. The bifurcation and reconciliation take much time, especially for assessments with several transactions. Due to the above difficulties, the taxpayer requested an extension of the statutory deadlines as follows:
  • Non-audit case ITR filing: Up to October 15, 2025
  • Tax Audit Report (TAR): Up to November 15, 2025
  • Audit Case ITR filing: Up to December 31, 2025
This extension will provide much-needed relief to taxpayers and professionals while ensuring better compliance, accuracy and transparency in reporting.
