Big Relief for Taxpayers: Pending Income Tax Refunds Finally Released After Months of Delay
Several taxpayers have finally started receiving their pending income tax refunds in the last 24 hours. After weeks of delays and complaints, this sudden increase in refund credits has brought relief to many people.
Several taxpayers received large refund amounts late at night or early in the morning. Some professionals said their clients received substantial refunds, including amounts between Rs 15 lakh and Rs 17 lakh. This has given hope to others who have been waiting for months.
However, not all refunds have been processed yet. A large number of income tax returns are still pending. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary reportedly said that about 8.8 crore income tax returns were filed till February 4, 2026. Out of these, nearly 24.64 lakh returns have been under process for more than three months.
Experts say that more high-value refunds are likely to be cleared in the coming days. They have advised taxpayers not to panic, as refunds are released in batches according to the Centralised Processing Centre (CPC) timelines. Taxpayers should also ensure that their bank accounts are pre-validated and properly linked with their PAN to avoid further delays.
How to Check Refund Status
Here's how you can check your refund status:
Step 1: Visit the Income Tax Portal (eportal.incometax.gov.in)
Step 2: Log in using your PAN and Aadhaar.
Step 3: After logging in, you will be able to see your latest ITR status.
Step 4: In case your ITR status is not visible, they navigate to 'e-file' and select 'Income Tax Return' and lastly click on 'View Filed Returns'.
