CBI Arrests Five Accused Including Two Public Servants Of NHAI for accepting Bribe of Rs.4 Lakhs
The Central Bureau of Investigation(CBI) arrested an Accounts Officer & Junior Accounts Officer, both of Regional Office, National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), Dispur, Guwahati (Assam) and three employees including Executive Director of a private company based at Gurugram (Haryana) in an alleged bribery of Rs.4 lakh.
A case was registered against Accounts Officer, Junior Accounts Officer, both posted at Regional Office, National Highway Authority of India, Dispur, Guwahati and others including a private company based at Gurugram & its three employees; other unknown persons etc. The case relates to the allegations of extending favours to the said company by the public servants for processing & clearance of bills, release of Bank Guarantees etc. in lieu of illegal gratifications. It was further alleged that the said company had executed a contract of road widening in Meghalaya in the year 2018 for which discharge certificate was to be issued by NHAI after completion of 04 years of mandatory maintenance on 31.03.2022. It was also claimed that public servants and others favoured the said private company in the processing and clearance of final bills, as well as the release of bank guarantees held by NHAI and the issuance of a discharge certificate by NHAI, for which a bribe was allegedly paid to the public servants.
The CBI set up a trap and arrested both public officials for seeking and taking a bribe of Rs.4 lakh from a private company employee acting on its behalf, who delivered the cash with the help of other employees. Employees of the private enterprise were also apprehended.
Searches were carried out at the premises of the accused in 15 locations, including Guwahati, Bengaluru, Gurugram, Shillong, and Patna, which resulted in the discovery of incriminating materials. A total of Rs.2.33 crore (approximately) was confiscated from the premises of the stated private company's Executive Director.
All of the apprehended suspects will be brought before the Guwahati Competent Court.
