The CBI arrested an Income Tax Department stenographer in Chennai after catching him red-handed while accepting a Rs. 1.5 lakh bribe to clear pending tax dues.

CBI Catches Income Tax Stenographer Red-Handed While Accepting Bribe of Rs. 1.5 Lakh in Chennai

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has officially disclosed through a press release dated February 03, 2026, that they have arrested a Stenographer from the Income Tax Department, Chennai, red-handed while demanding and accepting a bribe amounting to Rs. 1.5 lakh from the complainant.

A complaint was registered against the officer on February 02, 2026, alleging that he had demanded a bribe equal to 10% of pending income tax dues amounting to Rs. 19 lakh for the Assessment Year 2020-21 (Financial Year 2019-20).

In return, the accused promised the complainant to clear its tax demand. In conclusion to the complaint registered, the CBI led a trap to catch the accused red-handed while accepting the bribe payment from the complainant. The bribe money was recovered from his possession during the operation.

Thereafter, the CBI also carried out several search operations at the resident premises of the accused, where they recovered documents related to the case, considered important for the purpose of investigation. The accused was arrested and produced before a competent court in Chennai on February 03, 2026. The court has presently sent him back to judicial custody.

Further investigation in relation to the case is ongoing.
