The case was registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on September 23, 2016, based on a complaint filed by a taxpayer from Jalgaon district. According to the complaint, the income tax returns of the complainant and his wife had been selected for detailed scrutiny.

The complainant alleged that Bhadani had demanded a bribe to avoid detailed scrutiny of their returns and to issue favourable assessment orders. Acting on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap and caught the then Income Tax Officer red-handed while accepting Rs. 40,000 from the complainant.

After completing its investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet against Bhadani on December 28, 2016. The court framed charges against him on December 20, 2021.
