The Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Delhi East Commissionerate successfully launched a GST Registration Campaign on March 21-22, 2025, to increase registration and compliance among unregistered manufacturers and traders.

It is a part of the Union Finance Ministry’s outreach to expand the country’s tax base. It is a two-day campaign to engage unregistered manufacturers and traders and educate them on the significance of registering with the GST Department and following the rules of the law.

During the campaign, GST officials addressed to over 2,000 trader queries and assisted them with the registration procedure. The campaign proved to be a success, with a large number of unregistered traders voluntarily registering their businesses under GST, and more than 100 registration applications prepared on the spot after following due process.

GST helpdesks were established up in several local marketplaces to address queries and assist with the GST registration procedure. According to an official statement, the local trade community has responded positively to this initiative, with many of them previously unregistered and conducting their transactions mostly in cash, which has a negative influence on the Indian economy.

As part of the outreach efforts, 200 students from prestigious universities were invited to become GST Ambassadors, raising awareness for the two-day campaign. These volunteers were constantly watched and guided by a huge team of GST officers, which included 10 Assistant Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners, as well as over 80 officials.

The students actively participated in raising awareness about GST rules and assisting traders by going from shop to shop to educate them on the process and benefits. The students conducted door-to-door campaigning and assisted with a survey to generate leads for GST officers to follow up on later.

According to an official statement, they distributed 7,500 booklets in Hindi and Urdu that highlighted the GST Registration rules.

The National School of Drama (NSD) team also organised a public announcement system, skits, street plays and mohalla campaigns in various locations to raise awareness of the significance of paying taxes to the government and the repercussions of nonpayment.

“The successful execution of this campaign marks a crucial step in increasing GST registration among the unorganised sectors, thereby improving compliance and contributing to the overall growth and stability of the Indian economy,” Pawan Kumar, Commissioner of CGST Delhi East, stated.

The CGST Delhi East Commissionerate would continue such activities and ensure that all trade sectors are integrated into the formal economy, enabling greater openness, accountability, and economic progress, he said.

In his remarks, Mahesh Kumar Rustogi, Director General, Directorate General of Taxpayer Services (DGTS), emphasised the necessity of formalising the economy in order to achieve the $5 trillion target by registering more business units via the GST network.
