The Government of Delhi has launched a new law called the "Societies Registration (Delhi Amendment) Act, 2026", which gives the Registrar the authority to cancel the registration of societies under some circumstances. The amendment was approved by the Lt Governor on April 23, 2026.
The new law was passed by the Delhi Legislative Assembly. It replaces the old Societies Registration Act, 1860.
A new section, called Section 12D, has been added to the law. This section gives the Registrar the power to cancel a society’s registration in certain cases.
- The registration or name of the society is contrary to the law.
- The registration or renewal certificate was obtained through fraud or false information.
- The society's activities are against its stated objectives or are harmful to public policy.
