Extend Income-tax return filing deadline of 31 December 2021: CA Associations
Several chartered accounting groups and corporate bodies have petitioned the finance minister to extend the deadline for filing income tax returns (ITR) for the fiscal year (AY) 2021-22. (that is, financial year 2020-21).
Earlier on September 9, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) extended the ITR-filing deadlines for several categories of taxpayers due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The deadline for individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUF), among others, has been pushed out from July 31, 2021 to December 31, 2021. This applies to taxpayers who are not required to have their books of accounts audited.
Pointed Out the failure of New Income Tax Portal
Several tax advisors support this move. "In light of the epidemic, the tax authorities extended the fiscal year 2019-2020 (AY 2020-21) until May 31, 2021. However, in the fiscal year 2020-2021 (AY 2021-22), in addition to the pandemic, taxpayers encountered difficulties while utilising the new income-tax return-filing service, which was not operational until August/September 2021."
Even after the availability of New Tax Portal, various taxpayers faced glitches while filing their return.
Another barrier is the recently implemented annual information statement (AIS). "Reconciling AIS with tax calculations could be time-consuming for taxpayers." However, the government has stated that no demands will be issued for the current financial year if there is a discrepancy between AIS and actual reported income.
