Filed Your ITR but Haven’t Verified It Yet? Here Are 5 Easy Ways to E-Verify Your ITR in Minutes

The filing process for Assessment Year 2026-27 has begun, and many taxpayers are now getting ready to file their Income Tax Returns (ITRs). Most people know how important it is to file the return before the deadline, but many are not aware that the process is not complete after only submitting the ITR.

After filing your ITR, it is also important to e-verify it. The Income Tax Department does not treat the return as fully filed until e-verification. To put it simply, filing ITR is the first step and e-verification is the last step of confirmation to complete the process.

The good news is that e-verification of ITR can be done in multiple ways for taxpayers. There are 5 different methods available, and people can choose the easiest and most convenient one for them. These options make the process simple, fast and user-friendly.

Before we talk about the five methods, it is important to know why e-verification is important. Many taxpayers think that the income tax return filing process is complete when they click on the submit button. But the Income Tax Department has also asked taxpayers to verify their return after filing it. Without e-verification, the ITR may be considered incomplete. This can delay refunds and may also lead to compliance-related problems later.

Aadhaar OTP

One of the fastest and most popular ways is Aadhaar OTP verification. Taxpayers can avail this option if they have linked their PAN and mobile number with Aadhaar. On the income tax portal, when you select the Aadhaar OTP option, a one-time password is sent to the registered mobile number. Enter this OTP to complete the verification process within a matter of minutes.

Digital Signature

Taxpayers, especially businesses or those who have to get their accounts audited, have to have a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC). In these cases, the process can be done in a secure way, with a digital signature as proof of verification.

Bank or Demat Account

Another method is verification through a bank account or a demat account. For this, the account must first be pre-validated on the income tax portal. Once the taxpayer selects this option, an OTP is sent to the mobile number or email linked with the account. After entering the OTP, the return gets verified easily.

Net Banking

Net banking is also a simple and hassle-free way to verify an ITR. Many banks provide the option to e-verify directly through their online banking services. After logging into the net banking account, taxpayers can go to the tax filing or e-verification section, which redirects them to the income tax portal to complete the verification instantly.

Physical ITR-V

For those who cannot use online methods, there is still an offline option available. Taxpayers can download the ITR-V acknowledgement form, sign it, and send it to the Centralised Processing Centre (CPC) in Bengaluru. This must be done within 30 days of filing the return.

Important Things to Keep in Mind

Taxpayers should update their mobile number and email ID on the income tax portal as the OTP verification depends on these details.

They should also keep in mind that the income tax refunds are processed only after successful verification of the ITR. Use only the official income tax website or the banking platforms that are authorised for this purpose. Do not click on any suspicious links or messages for security reasons.

E-verifying your ITR takes only a few minutes, but if you don’t do it, it can cause unnecessary delays and trouble later.
