ITR Filing Season Begins: CBDT Releases ITR-1 and ITR-4 Utilities for AY 2026-27 The anxious wait of taxpayers has come to an end, as the Income Tax Department has released the utilities for ITR-1 and ITR-4 forms. This announcement officially begins the tax filing season for the Assessment Year 2026-27.  The ITR-1 form, also called 'Sahaj', is used by resident individuals, including salaried employees and pensioners, whose total income is up to Rs 50 lakh. This form covers income originated from sources including salaries, two house properties, other sources (Interest etc.), long-term capital gains (LTCGs) under Section 112A up to Rs 1.25 lakh, and agricultural income to Rs 5,000.

While, on the other hand, the ITR-4 form, also known as 'Sugam', is used by resident individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) and Firms (other than LLPs) whose aggregate income is up to Rs 50 lakh. This form is primarily designed for small businesses, freelancers, and professionals who choose the presumptive taxation scheme under Sections 44AD, 44ADA, or 44AE. Further, it permits disclosure of long-term capital gains (LTCGs) of up to Rs 1.25 lakh under Section 112A of the Income Tax Act. Taxpayers can now start preparing and furnishing their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Financial Year 2025-26 (Assessment Year 2026-27).
