Five Tamil Nadu Cops Face Bribery Action

Five police personnel in Tamil Nadu have faced disciplinary action within a week in separate cases involving allegations of demanding or accepting bribes. The action includes suspension and dismissal from service. The cases were reported from Tirunelveli, Chennai and nearby areas, with the alleged bribe amounts ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 10,000.
In Tirunelveli, head constable Sorna Raj of Melapalayam Police Station was suspended for allegedly demanding Rs 1,000 from a two-wheeler rider during a routine vehicle check. The rider reportedly had incomplete documents. Sorna Raj allegedly asked him for money and shared his Google Pay number to receive the payment.
In Chennai, sub-inspector Sivaraj and constable Vivek of North Beach Police Station were suspended following an Internal Vigilance Cell enquiry. They were accused of accepting Rs 10,000 through Google Pay from the owner of a stolen two-wheeler in connection with the release of the vehicle.
A sub-inspector posted at Madhavaram Police Station was also suspended after a preliminary enquiry by the Internal Vigilance Cell found a complaint of demanding a bribe to be established.
The strongest action was taken against sub-inspector Marishwaran of Puzhal Police Station, who was dismissed from service following a departmental enquiry into allegations of demanding and accepting bribes.
The charges against Marishwaran are of 2024 when he was posted in Anna Nagar Police Station. However, the departmental inquiry found the charges to be true and he was dismissed by the authorities on the grounds of repeated allegations of demanding bribe.
The five cases involved different situations, including a vehicle check and the release of a stolen two-wheeler. The police department took different disciplinary actions based on the findings of the respective enquiries.
The latest action comes amid continued scrutiny of corruption allegations within the Tamil Nadu police force. In February, the state police chief had directed senior officers to review cases involving personnel under prolonged suspension due to disciplinary, vigilance or criminal proceedings on a case-by-case basis.
