Govt. appoints IRS Officer Nitin Gupta as Chairman of CBDT

IRS officer Nitin Gupta has been appointed as the CBDT new chairman, a notification issued on June 25th stated.

Gupta, a member of the Board who was hired by the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) in 1986 and belongs to the Income Tax cadre, would retire in September of the following year.

After J B Mohapatra departed on April 30, Board member and IRS officer Sangeeta Singh took over the position of CBDT chief in a second capacity.

After the position of Member (Investigation) had been empty for three years, it was overseen as an additional task by the CBDT Chair’s predecessors, PC Mody, Sushil Chandra, Mohapatra, and Singh. Gupta assumed leadership of the position in September 2021.

The CBDT is led by a Chairman and has a maximum of six members with the title of special secretary. It serves as the Income Tax department’s administrative body.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Shri Nitin Gupta, IRS (IT:86), Member Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) as chairman, Central Board of Direct Taxes from the date of assumption of the post.
