Since the e-way bill is an electronic document, it has to be generated online. Thus, the functioning of the logistics industry of every state was changed drastically, including that of Gujarat. 3. E-way Bill Generation

1. What is An E-way Bill

The GST e-way bill is an electronic document which is to be generated while transporting goods within a state or outside a state. The e-way bill has to be generated online through the national e-way bill portal. However, this document has to be generated only for the transportation of a consignment worth Rs. 50,000 or more for goods which are taxable under GST.

In order to generate an e-way bill, individuals are required to register or enroll themselves on the e-way bill portal. Once they have created an account, they can generate e-way bills from any corner of the nation. The bill should be generated before the consignment is dispatched from its place of supply.

The introduction of e-way bills reduced the time consumed in verification of documents while in transit. It reduced the hassle of paperwork and the number of checkpoints at intrastate and interstate borders. Furthermore, e-way bills reduced the costs incurred due to maintenance of warehouses at irrelevant areas.

The introduction of e-way bills helped the transporters to deliver consignments in lesser time at much reduced costs. Thus, it improved the efficiency of the Indian logistics industry and made things more transparent by transferring the system online.

2. Gujarat Before and After the E-way Bill

Gujarat is considered as one of Indias most business generating states. Many of the states trading practices have contributed greatly to the economic growth of the nation. The recent introduction of the e-way bill under GST affected Gujarats logistics industry in a majorly positive way. It not only wade the transportation system more efficient, but also increased the level of transparency throughout the state.

Before the introduction of the GST e-way bill in Gujarat, the state followed its own transportation system which was also quite simple and transparent. The transportation system was structured in such a way that it eliminated as much hassle for businesses as possible.

Under the VAT system, a permit form had to be obtained from the commercial tax department website of Gujarat. This form had to be filled out before the movement of goods within or outside of Gujarat. Three copies of the form were to be generated electronically by the supplier, one for the supplier, transporter, and recipient, each. This allowed all three individuals to be responsible for the transportation of the goods. It also helped in tracking the movement of the goods.

After the introduction of the GST e-way bill, Gujarats transportation system became more centralized. The movement of goods is now recorded on the national e-way bill portal online, which is monitored by the central government.
