The CBIC Chairman, Vivek Johri in a news letter has stated that GST Evasion worth of crores and Smugglings of Gold and Cigarette Detected.

On the Anti-Evasion side, it was a busy week. Officers of CGST Ranchi Zone had earlier detected a case of availment of ineligible input tax credit for supply of exempted goods. Last week, Rs.122 Crore was recovered in the case. With that the total recovery made in this case is to the tune of Rs.202 Crore.

On the side of anti-smuggling, officers from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) intercepted 43 kg of gold worth over Rs.26 crore in three distinct incidents. Interception of a fishing boat and a cooperative operation with the Indian Coast Guard to retrieve gold from the seabed off the coast of Chennai were among the examples.

In another case, a combined operation involving the Indian Coast Guard, DRI, and our field formations resulted in the seizure of over 32 kilogrammes of gold worth more than Rs.20 crores from two fishing boats attempting to transport the contraband in the Gulf of Mannar off the coast of Tamil Nadu. Cases like this underline the critical role that Indian Customs plays in coastal and marine security.

Further, continuing its drive against smuggled cigarettes, sleuths from the DRI seized more than 54 Lakh foreign-origin Cigarette sticks valued in excess of Rs. 10 Crore in Mizoram.
