GST Return Filing Process Revised: Know 2 Major Changes The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) has made a big change to how tax returns are filed. From July 2025, taxpayers won't be able to file their monthly and yearly GST returns if they are more than three years late from when they were supposed to file them. This new rule comes from the Finance Act, 2023, and will affect different types of GST returns like GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B.

Warning given regarding GST Return Filing

GSTN has told all taxpayers to check their records and file any missing returns quickly. The warning says that after three years from when the return was due, people won't be able to file GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-4, GSTR-5, GSTR-5A, GSTR-6, GSTR-7, GSTR-8, and GSTR-9.

How the Changes will Affect

The rule stops people from delaying too long
  • GSTN's warning also says that not only regular business returns but also returns for paying taxes, yearly returns, and tax collection returns will be blocked after three years. This rule will make the system more organized and stop people from avoiding their duties for too long
  • At the same time, it could badly hurt taxpayers who haven't filed due to court cases or honest mistakes.
Denial of Input Tax Credit (ITC): Non-Filing of GST Return will ultimately lead to cancellation of GST Number and denial of ITC to customers, as the GST number is canceled by the department on a retrospective basis in these cases. Read Press Release

GSTR 3B filing with Locked Liability

The second Change that has been brought by the GSTN is that now the auto-filled liability in GSTR-3B cannot be edited by the taxpayer from July 2025. If you find any errors or want to make changes in GSTR-1, then you have to do the same through GSTR-1A. Read Press Release
