GSTN Issues Fresh Advisory on E-Way Bill Enhancements and API Changes: Effective from August 1, 2026
The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) had previously announced certain enhancements in the e-Way Bill system via an advisory dated May 20, 2026, wherein it was specified that it is obligatory to capture "Ship-to GSTIN" in Bill-to/Ship-to transactions.
It was further flagged that the value “URP” must be entered in the Ship-to GSTIN field, where the consignee is an unregistered person. Concerning these enhancements, the GST authorities have received several representations from trade, ERP vendors, GSPs, ASPs, private IRPs, and other stakeholders asking the tax department to clarify the applicability of the said requirement in cases where an e-Way Bill is generated along with an e-Invoice or by using an IRN.
Some of the representations are based on the voluntary closure of the e-Way Bill facility and its possible impacts on portal-based and API-based operations.
Considering the same, the GSTN issued another advisory informing the stakeholders about the amendments introduced to the e-Invoice API, e-Way Bill by IRN API, and EWB Closure API. The GSTN has further flagged that these changes are available in the Sandbox environment for testing and system preparedness, with the changes set to take effect from August 01, 2026.
To be aware of the aforementioned changes, the relevant stakeholders are advised to access the advisory via the link below.
