The due date for filing the income tax return (ITR) for the financial year 2025-26 (assessment year 2026-27), i.e., July 31, 2026, has been ended, and as per a recent post shared by the Income Tax Department on its twitter handle, this year over 5.9 crore ITRs have been filed.

Now, those who filed and e-verified their tax returns within the statutory deadline are impatiently awaiting their income tax refunds. According to the records, the tax authorities generally do not delay refunds for ITRs filed with no mistakes. The timeline of refund release depends on factors such as successful e-verification, return processing, and whether any discrepancies are detected.

When Will Tax Dept Release Income Tax Refund for FY 2025-26?

Every taxpayer should be aware of the fact that the income tax department begins the refund process only when a taxpayer verifies his/her income tax return (ITR). The income tax department has clarified on its official website that "it takes 4-5 weeks for the refund to be credited to a taxpayer's account. However, if the refund is not received during this duration, the taxpayer must check for intimation regarding discrepancies in ITR; check email for any notification from the I-T Department regarding the refund. The taxpayer can also check refund status on e-filing as per the process detailed hereunder."

A tax expert says that even if you filed your tax returns in the last week of July and successfully e-verified it, then you can expect your tax refund within 2 to 6 weeks if you have not made any major mistakes in your return. Most of the taxpayers receive their income tax refund between mid-August and mid-September (when there are no major checks and discrepancies in returns).

What Is an Income Tax Refund?

When the amount paid by a taxpayer as taxes exceeds the actual amount due either by way of TDS or TCS, advance tax or self-assessment tax, the income tax department refunds the excess amount to the taxpayer; this amount is called a refund. Tax is calculated by the Income Tax Department after considering all deductions and exemptions during the assessment.
