ITR Utilities Out for AY 2025–26, But It’s Better not to file now; Know Reasons
The Income Tax Filing (ITR) has started online for the assessment year 2025-26 (financial year 2024-25). You can file your return using the utilities of ITR-1 and ITR-4 at the official website of the Income Tax Department if an audit is not needed for your accounts.
Taxpayers can file their return using ITR-1 and ITR-4 Excel utilities, which were made available the previous week (Step-by-step procedure of filing ITR is also available; you can check by yourself). But taxpayers should not file their return now; they should wait a little more. Here we have listed the reasons why taxpayers should wait.
Although ITR forms and Excel utilities are now available online for ITR-1 and ITR-4, making a rush towards filing ITR now can create problems. The first reason behind this is that TDS (Tax Deduction at Source) certificates have not yet been released. The reason behind the deadline for the TDS Return was May 31, 2025, and Form 26AS will take an additional 5 to 7 days to show revised entries. Form 16 will be given by employers to their employees by the mid of June.
Additionally, the Annual Information Statement (AIS) and Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS) are yet to be updated. Generally, they are updated by the first week of June.
The third reason is that ITR utilities for ITR-2, ITR-3, ITR-5, ITR-6, and ITR have not been made live yet.
For How Long Should Taxpayers Wait for Filing ITR?
Taxpayers should wait at least till the second week of June to file ITR. To date, TDS credits will be shown correctly in Form 26AS. Also, till this date, all income and tax details will be successfully reflected properly in AIS, and once Form 26AS, AIS, Form 16, etc. are successfully updated, they will facilitate cross-checking details while filing ITR and will assist in avoiding mistakes while filing ITR.
Additionally, this year’s deadline for filing ITR has been extended. The date has not shifted to September 15, 2025, for non-audit filers. Hence, now you have more time to identify mistakes in these forms and get them rectified before filing the return.
