Lok Sabha Recruitment 2023: The Parliament of India, through its Recruitment Branch in the Lok Sabha Secretariat, has announced vacancies for the post of Parliamentary Interpreter. The recruitment is on a direct basis, and online applications have been invited from eligible Indian citizens. A total of 13 vacancies are available, of which 8 are for English/Hindi stream interpreters, and 5 are for regional language/stream interpreters.
For the post of English/Hindi interpreters, the candidates must possess a Master’s degree in English with Hindi as a compulsory/elective subject at the degree level or a Master’s degree in Hindi with English as a compulsory/elective subject at the degree level or a Master’s degree in any other discipline with English and Hindi as compulsory/elective subjects at the degree level. As per Lok Sabha Recruitment 2023 official notification, the candidates should also have experience in translation or interpretation work and possess a certificate in computer course recognized by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE)/National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT) or courses equivalent to ‘O’ Level in terms of syllabus and duration of the course as prescribed by NIELIT. The upper age limit for candidates applying for this post is 35 years.
For the post of a regional language interpreter, the candidates must possess a Master’s degree in English or any other discipline (with English as a compulsory/elective subject at the degree level) with the concerned regional language(s) as recognized in the Constitution of India as a compulsory/elective subject at the degree level. As per Lok Sabha Recruitment 2023 official notification, the candidates should also have experience in translation or interpretation work and possess a certificate in computer course recognized by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE)/National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT) or courses equivalent to ‘O’ Level in terms of syllabus and duration of the course as prescribed by NIELIT. The upper age limit for candidates applying for this post is 35 years.

As per Lok Sabha Recruitment 2023 official notification, the Lok Sabha Secretariat has announced a total of 13 vacancies for the post of Parliamentary Interpreter in the 2023 recruitment drive. Out of these 13 vacancies, 2 vacancies are reserved for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC) category, and there are no reserved vacancies for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category. There are 4 reserved vacancies for candidates belonging to the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category, 6 vacancies for candidates belonging to the Unreserved (UR) category, and 1 vacancy for candidates belonging to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category.
Out of the 13 total vacancies, 8 vacancies are for English/Hindi stream interpreters, and 5 vacancies are for regional language/stream interpreters. The regional languages for which vacancies have been announced are Dogri, Kashmiri, Konkani, Santhali, and Sindhi, with one vacancy each.
As per Lok Sabha Sabha Recruitment 2023 official notification, the educational qualifications required for the post of Parliamentary Interpreter in the Lok Sabha Secretariat differ based on the language stream. For English/Hindi Interpreters, candidates must have a Master’s degree in English with Hindi as a compulsory or elective subject at the degree level, or a Master’s degree in Hindi with English as a compulsory or elective subject at the degree level, or a Master’s degree in any other discipline with English and Hindi as compulsory or elective subjects at the degree level.

Similar to English/Hindi Interpreters, it is desirable for candidates to have experience in translation or interpretation work, as well as a certificate in a computer course recognized by AICTE or NIELIT, or courses equivalent to ‘O’ Level in terms of syllabus and duration of the course as prescribed by NIELIT.
As per Lok Sabha Sabha Recruitment 2023 official notification, the selection procedure for the post of Interpreters includes four stages: Oration Test, Written Test, Simultaneous Interpretation Test, and Personal Interview. Only eligible candidates can appear for these tests, and the selection will be made on the basis of overall performance in all stages.
The Oration Test is of 200 marks and is designed to assess the fluency, language content, style, pronunciation, and accent of the candidate. A candidate for the post of Regional Language Interpreter will have to speak extempore for 3 minutes in English and 3 minutes in the Regional Language concerned, whereas a candidate for the post of English/Hindi Interpreter will have to speak for 3 minutes in English and 3 minutes in Hindi.
Only those candidates who qualify for the Oration Test will be allowed to appear for the Written Test. The Written Test will have two papers. For Regional Language Interpreters, Paper-I will have 50 multiple-choice objective-type questions each on General Knowledge & Current Affairs, General English, and the General regional language concerned, and Paper-II will have a translation from the concerned language to English of 100 marks from English to the concerned language of 100 marks. For English/Hindi Interpreters, Paper-I will have 50 multiple-choice objective-type questions each on General Knowledge & Current Affairs, General English, and General Hindi, and Paper-II will have a translation from English to Hindi of 100 marks and from Hindi to English of 100 marks.
Candidates will have to qualify both papers of the Written Test and components thereof at the requisite standards. Only those candidates who qualify the Written Test will be allowed to appear for the Simultaneous Interpretation Test. Prior to the test, candidates will be provided one or two-day training in simultaneous interpretation. The Simultaneous Interpretation Test will assess the performance of candidates under five specific parameters, i.e., Coverage, Accuracy, Style and Diction, Continuity of Interpretation, Voice, Pronunciation, and Accent.
Only those candidates who qualify for the Simultaneous Interpretation Test at the required standards will be allowed to appear for the Personal Interview. The Personal Interview will carry 50 marks, and candidates will have to qualify for the Personal Interview at the requisite standards.
Finally, among the candidates who qualify for Personal Interview, selection will be made on the basis of the overall performance of the candidates in the Oration Test, Written Test, Simultaneous Interpretation Test, and Personal Interview, subject to the availability of vacancies. Candidates belonging to SC and OBC categories availing the benefit of their category for qualifying for the Written Test and/or the Personal Interview and/or in age will not be entitled to occupy the ‘UR’ vacancy.
