Filing your Income Tax Return (ITR) every year is the responsibility of each taxpayer. All eligible taxpayers are required to declare their earnings from different sources, including profits from business, salary, gains from the sale of real estate, interest Payments, dividend payments, capital gains, etc. Filing ITR can offer several benefits. Your ITR is proof of your income and is often needed when you apply for a loan, credit card, or even a visa to travel abroad. Many people file their ITR and forget to save a copy. Here is how to file ITR and how you can get a copy of filed returns.
Step 1: Go to the e-portal of the Income Tax Department.
Step 2: If you are filing for the first time, then register using your PAN, Aadhaar and other required details.
Step 3: If you are already registered, log in using your user ID and Password.
Step 4: After logging in, click on e-file and go to Income Tax Returns and click on File Income Tax Return.
Step 5: Select the relevant assessment Year and choose your preferred mode of filing.
Step 6: Select Your Status (Individual, HUF, etc.) and select the applicable ITR Form.
Step 7: Select the reasons for filing (if applicable) and choose the Tax Regime (Old or New).
Step 8: Submit the required details and check the personal data, which is auto-filled and edit if needed.
Step 9: Once you proceed with the information, the portal will automatically compute your tax liability.
Step 10: You can pay the tax now or later, and once the tax is paid, click on preview return> proceed to Preview> Proceed to validation.
Step 11: Submit your return and make sure you e-verify it after submitting the ITR.
Step 12: A message will pop up saying that the e-filing and your ITR verification form will be ready for download.
