NIC enabled 2 Factor Authentication for e-Way Bill and e-Invoice System: Know the Process

National Informatics Centre (NIC) has enabled the two-factor authentication for logging in to the e-Way Bill/e-Invoice system.

To improve the security of the e-Way Bill/e-Invoice System, NIC is providing 2-Factor Authentication for logging into the system. In addition to the username and password, the OTP will be used to authenticate the login.

The OTP can be obtained in one of three ways. You can login to the system by entering any of the OTP.

The following are the numerous methods for generating OTP:

1. SMS:- Your OTP will be delivered as an SMS to your registered cellphone number.

2. In the ‘Sandes’ app:- Sandes is a government-provided messaging programme that allows you to send and receive messages. You can receive the OTP by downloading and installing the Sandes app on your registered cell number.

3. Employing the ‘NIC-GST-Shield‘ app:- ‘NIC-GST-Shield’ is a mobile app given by e-Way Bill / e-Invoice System that may create OTP. This programme can only be downloaded from the e-Waybill / e-Invoice portal via the ‘Main Menu2-Factor Authentication Install NIC-GST-Shield’ link. Install and register this app on your registered cellphone number. You must guarantee that the time displayed in the app is in sync with the e-Waybill / e-Invoice system. When you open the app, the OTP is displayed. You can proceed with the authentication by entering this OTP. Every 30 seconds, the OTP is refreshed. You will not need to connect to the internet or rely on a mobile network to generate an OTP using this software.

Two Factor Authentication Registration

When you log in to the e-Way bill System, go to Main Menu 2 Factor Authentication and validate your registration. Once confirmed, the system will prompt you for an OTP as well as your username and password. Individual user accounts are used for OTP authentication. Sub-users of GSTIN would be authenticated separately based on their registered cellphone number in the e-Way Bill/ e-Invoice System. Once you have registered for two-factor authentication, you will be able to use it for both the e-Way bill and the e-Invoice system.

You can de-register this service at any moment by clicking the ‘2 Factor Authentication Registration/Deregistration’ link. This service is now offered on an opt-in basis; however, it will become mandatory in the future.
