No Advertisements Encouraging Online Betting are Allowed, According to a Ministry Directive to the Media.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued a warning to print, electronic, and digital media outlets not to promote online betting services. A lot of advertising for online betting websites/platforms has appeared in print, electronic, social, and online media, prompting the alert.
The advice states that betting and gambling, which are banned in most regions of the country, pose a substantial financial and socio-economic risk to customers, particularly young and children. Furthermore, these adverts for internet betting have the effect of promoting this generally forbidden behavior, according to the report. “Online betting advertisements are deceptive, and do not appear to be in strict compliance with the Consumer Protection Act 2019, the Advertising Code under the Cable Television Networks Regulation Act, 1995, and advertisement norms under the Norms of Journalistic Conduct laid down by the Press Council of India under the Press Council Act, 1978,” it said.
The warning was made in the interest of the general public, and it advised the print and electronic media to avoid publishing advertisements for online betting sites. It has also advised internet and social media, as well as online advertisement intermediates and publishers, not to broadcast or target such advertisements in India.
