President Draupadi Murmu attended the convocation ceremony of the 78th batch of Officer Trainees of the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax) as the Chief Guest. On this occasion, she gave important messages to the officers regarding their duties and responsibilities. In her address, the President said that India’s economic progress in the last few years has been very rapid and inspiring. The steady increase in direct tax collections in the country shows that tax compliance has improved and the tax base has also expanded. At the same time, it is also clear that the trust between the citizens and the administration has strengthened.

She said that the Income Tax Act 2025, which came into force from April 1, 2026, is a major and historic change in the tax system of the country. This is an important step towards a modern, simple and transparent tax system. However, the success of this reform entirely depends on its correct and transparent implementation, the responsibility of which lies with the IRS officials.

The President further said that the role of Indian Revenue Service officers is not limited to tax collection alone. They are the guardians of public trust and also the protectors of justice and fairness. Their role is very important in the country’s economic progress, social justice and good governance. She advised the young officers to always include humility, restraint and sensitivity in their work behaviour. She said that the responsibility of the officers is not only to enforce the rules but also to strengthen the public trust in the administrative system. Decisions based on justice, transparency and honesty not only strengthen governance but also contribute to the overall development of the country.

The President also said that behind every income tax return of the country lies the story of a citizen’s hard work, dreams and enterprise. In such a situation, the responsibility of the officers is not only to enforce the law but also to treat every citizen with respect and fairness, especially the weaker sections of society. In the end, she said that today India is rapidly moving towards the resolve of a developed India. In such times, the responsibility of the administrative system and every institution associated with it increases to work with the highest level of efficiency, transparency and inclusivity.
