The Indian government plans to continue its export tax refund program (RoDTEP) past its current September 30, 2025, expiration date, giving exporters some stability amid global market uncertainties. The budget for this program has increased to Rs. 18,000 crore for the 2025-26 fiscal year, up from Rs. 16,575 crore last year. Officials believe this budget should be sufficient since exports aren't growing rapidly due to global economic challenges. The RoDTEP scheme refunds various taxes that exporters pay during production and transportation, including fuel taxes and electricity duties. Though most manufacturing sectors benefit from the program, some industries such as steel, pharmaceuticals, and chemicals are exempt. Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and Export Oriented Units (EOUs) were only brought on board during March 2024 but it is not certain whether their inclusion will be carried forward in the extension. This has caused some exporters to complain about unfair treatment. Many exporters are asking the government for a longer-term extension of about five years instead of the short-term renewals they've been getting, which would help them plan pricing better. India's exports remained flat last year at about $437 billion, and the situation has become more challenging with US President Trump's threats of new tariffs.
