Teacher to CEO of 25000 Crore Startup: Every person using the Internet must have heard about the man behind India’s largest online learning platform. Yes, you guessed it right, I am talking about the founder of Physics Wallah, Alakh Pandey. From a humble physics teacher to the CEO of India’s largest online learning platform, he has become an inspiration to millions of students and educators around the world. His online learning platform, Physics Wallah has become a Unicorn by crossing the valuation mark of 3.3 Billion Dollars.
The Physics Wallah is an ed-tech company that is now ruling the JEE and NEET industry. Alakh has revolutionized the way physics is taught in India and has made quality education accessible to all. His inspiration to choose the teaching career was to make quality educational content available to the masses, especially underprivileged students. Alakh started his teaching journey as a 22-year-old physics teacher earning Rs 5,000 a month at a coaching institute in Allahabad.
Alakh Pandey founded his ed-tech company Physics Wallah in 2016. Physics Wallah was a Youtube channel back then. His YouTube channel progressively grew in popularity, and in 2020, he collaborated with Prateek Maheshwari to launch a full-fledged ed-tech company. Physics Wallah, which was founded in the midst of a pandemic, has grown at an amazing rate, clocking approx Rs 400 crore in income in the fiscal year 2022, with a reported nine-fold growth. Today Physics Wallah has over 10 million subscribers on Youtube.
Alakh Pandey’s journey from classroom to CEO is a pretty filmy one. Born and raised in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, Pandey’s journey to success was not an easy one. He did his schooling at Bishop Johnson School & College, Allahabad. In 2011, he enrolled at Harcourt Butler Technical University, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, to study Mechanical Engineering. However, he dropped out of college in his third year and went back to his hometown in Allahabad. In Allahabad, he started teaching Physics at an educational institute for Rs 5000 a month.
While teaching offline, he realized that the reach of offline coaching is limited. Realizing the vacuum in the online teaching industry, he decided to start teaching online. In 2016, he started a Youtube channel named Physics Wallah for online education. He started uploading physics lectures on his Youtube channel. To increase his reach and views, Alakh improved the quality of his lectures by using standard study material in his lectures. Gradually his videos started getting more views and attention.
In 2018, he started providing his own quality study material for classes 10th to 12th and the IIT JEE/NEET UG exam. He employed several educators and tech members to increase the footprint of his ed-tech company. He also launched the app for Physics Wallah, which garnered 35,000 subscriptions within 4 days. In 2022, his ed-tech startup Physics Wallah became the 101st Indian Unicorn. He was reportedly offered Rs 75 crore salary but rather he chose to work on his startup so that he can provide low-cost education to his students.
