Trinamool Congress receives 11 Income Tax Notices in 72 Hours
The Trinamool Congress filed a complaint with the Election Commission, alleging “selective raids” by all central agencies – CBI, ED, I-T, and NIA – on party candidates and leaders to prevent them from conducting poll-related activity on Friday.
TMC spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP Saket Gokhale took to social media at midday on Friday to announce that they have received 11 income-tax notices in the last 72 hours for various years, including some dating back seven years. The NIA also summoned eight TMC workers during the day in connection with a bomb at Bhupatinagar, East Midnapore, in December 2022.
A five-member TMC delegation visited the EC’s office in New Delhi and submitted a memorandum on Friday. TMC stated that the poll panel will discuss them “in detail” on Monday.
Bengal minister Shashi Panja, who was part of the delegation, stated, “The TMC is worried by the way in which Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren was arrested soon before the election declaration. After the model code of conduct was implemented, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was arrested. Mahua Moitra’s offices in Bengal were searched in order to stop her campaign. State Minister Chandranath Sinha is receiving one summons after another. Even a Kolkata Municipal Councillor’s (Jui Biswas) residence was raided (by I-T) for three days.”
Panja stated that central agencies’ “selective raids” on opposition leaders are “discriminatory, illegal, and contrary to the EC’s assertions of free and fair elections,” and that Bengal appears to be the primary target. She pointed out that the EC has the authority under Article 234 of the Constitution to ensure a level playing field.
Shortly after TMC representatives met with the EC in Delhi, party leader Kunal Ghosh took to X to claim that the NIA was working against TMC at the request of the BJP. The NIA has summoned TMC workers in connection with a December 2022 blast that destroyed a TMC worker’s residence in East Midnapore, killing three people.
