51.04 crore Accounts opened with deposit balance of Rs. 2,08,855 crore under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana
A total of 51.04 crore Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) accounts with a deposit balance of Rs. 2,08,855 crore have been opened as of November 29, 2023. This was stated by Union Minister of State for Finance Dr. Bhagwat Kisanrao Karad in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha.
The Minister said that on August 28, 2014, the PMJDY previously known as the National Mission for Financial Inclusion, was established. It aims to ensure comprehensive financial inclusion in the country by providing universal access to banking facilities and basic bank accounts to every unbanked adult.
The Minister went on to say that the PMJDY programme does not have any built-in provisions for micro investments, such as flexible recurring deposits. However, as per the terms and conditions of their individual banks, owners of PMJDY accounts may benefit from micro investments like flexi-recurring deposits and other offerings.
According to the Minister, as of November 22, 2023, 4.30 crore PMJDY accounts had no balance because the programme has an inherent provision that waives the need for PMJDY accounts to have a minimum balance.
