United Breweries Limited Receives GST Notice worth 18.60 Crore for non-payment of turnover tax on beer sales
United Breweries Limited has informed the stock exchanges about receiving orders and demand notices from the Kerala State Goods & Services Tax Department. The company disclosed this information on June 11, 2025, following regulatory requirements.
The orders were issued by the Deputy Commissioner of State Tax [from the Taxpayer Services Section] in Palakkad, Kerala, while following Section 17(3) of the Kerala General Sales Tax Act, 1963. The orders dealt with two financial years: 2022-23 and 2023-24. The company received the orders on June 10, 2015.
The tax department has raised a demand of Rs. 18,60,45,394 GST. The demand alleges non-payment of turnover tax on beer sales. This is a significant amount that the tax authorities claim the company owes.
But United Breweries Limited has said this demand in question will not have a material effect on their operations. The company stated that they had already sufficiently provided for this demand in their financial records, and that means they had factored in such matters (and had already put money aside to deal with it).
The company is pursuing appropriate remedies against the Kerala tax department orders, which suggests a right of appeal or that the company is disputing the demand through the appropriate legal process.
