May 2026 Compliance Calendar With Complete Due Dates And Action Plan

May 2026 is a very important month for compliance. During this period, along with the monthly filings for April 2026, quarterly income tax filings are also required to be made. If the due dates are missed, interest, late fees and penalties are charged. Therefore, it is important to complete every compliance on time.

Income Tax Compliance

There are two main tasks related to TDS when filing ITR. First, deposit the payment of TDS deducted in April. Second, to file a TDS return for the entire quarter, January to March 2026. Apart from this, Form 16A also has to be issued for non-salary payments.
If TDS is not deposited on time, interest at the rate of 1% or 1.5% per month is charged. There is a penalty of Rs 200 per day for late filing of the TDS return. The new Income Tax Act 2025 comes into effect from this month; hence, it is necessary to pay TDS as per the new sections.

The proper planning is crucial in GST; separate returns have to be filed for transactions till April 2026. Every return has a different due date. GSTR-1 shows the details of sales, while GSTR-3B is a summary along with the tax payment. Taxpayers under the QRMP scheme don’t need to file GSTR-3B this month, but they still have to make the tax payment using PMT-06.

For example, if shares are allotted, a director changes or a board resolution is passed, then related forms have to be filed within 30 days. If the filing is not done on time, penalties are imposed on both the company and the directors. Annual filings are not part of this month.

Practical Compliance Focus

May is not just the month of filing, but it is also the time of year-end review. During this time, it is necessary to reconcile GST and books so that the opening balances of April are correct. Complete reconciliation of Q4 should be done before filing the TDS return.

It is also important to verify salary and payroll so that PF and ESI match correctly. Apart from this, this is also the right time to start preparing for the ITR filing season.
