Govt Notifies Mandatory 30-Minute Break After 5 Hours of Continuous Work

The Ministry of Labour and Employment has recently issued a notification on May 13, 2026, regarding working hours under the Occupational Safety, Health, and Working Conditions Code, 2020.

The Central Government has now officially introduced a rule regarding continuous working hours using its powers given under Section 25(1)(b) of the Code.

According to the notification, no employee will work continuously for more than five hours without a break. After completing five hours of continuous work, workers must be given a rest interval of at least 30 minutes.

This rule came into effect from the date the notification was issued.
