Faster Tax Refunds This Year, But Small Errors Can Still Cause Delays

This year, taxpayers who have submitted their income tax returns (ITR) are getting their refunds far quicker than before. Rather than having to wait for several months to get the refund, many people now receive their refunds in just 7-10 working days. However, the process may take up to a month in some cases.

The refund procedure in the Income Tax Department has been made fast through technological support. After the return gets e-verification, refunds are normally paid within 4-5 weeks, but people have started getting their refunds much before that.

Refund claims are made possible through automated processing. Claims that are consistent with AIS and TDS claims, together with proper bank information and prompt e-verification, tend to be processed faster.

A tax specialist states that those who file their claims accurately, have AIS and TDS information consistent, provide correct bank information, and have completed e-verification promptly tend to receive their refunds within 7-10 working days. Mismatch in tax information is one of the main causes of delays.

Refunds are processed more quickly now; however, the process has become more data-dependent. Sometimes even the smallest discrepancy in income tax records results in delays, as the Income Tax Department uses data-based procedures for processing refunds through systems like AIS and Form 26AS.

This increased speed will not necessarily mean that the refund is instantaneous. Some cases will need to undergo extra checks through the Risk Management Framework of the Income Tax Department.

Refund delays can occur where the return is flagged as having a tax discrepancy or risk of tax evasion in the Risk Management Framework of the Income Tax Department.

In case the refunds are not credited in time, one should verify whether there have been any communications or notices from the Income Tax Department and the status of the refund via the e-filing portal. The time period for refunds following reissue generally takes 7-10 days.
