Extension of ITR Filing Deadline Due to Non-Functioning of IT Portal for FY 2023-24 | AY 2024-25

The All India Federation of Tax Practitioners (AIFTP) has made a representation before the Hon’ble Finance Minister of India, Nirmala Sitharaman to request an extension of the deadline for filing income tax returns due to the non-operating income tax portal, as well as instructions to the agency in responsible for maintaining the portal to fix the problems and ensure that the site works properly.

The Association Write that, “I hope you are well and in high spirits as you read this letter. I’m writing to inform you that the Income Tax e-filing portal has been down for the previous two weeks. This technical glitch has seriously impeded taxpayers’ ability to submit their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) on time. I request that you provide the required instructions to the agency in charge of maintaining the portal to address those issues and ensure that the portal functions effectively.”

Given the essential significance of this situation, it is a request to your respected office to consider extending the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns for the current financial year. The current deadline of July 31, 2024, is quickly approaching, and the portal’s persistent outage has prevented many taxpayers from filing their taxes on time.

An extension would not only ease taxpayers’ difficulties but would also ensure that tax regulations are followed without unnecessary pressure. It would also help to avoid excessive fees and interest for late submissions.

We have huge faith and trust that the gravity of this situation will be understandable and immediate action will be taken to resolve it. It will sound favourable if consideration of our request is accepted and will be much appreciated by all taxpayers throughout the country.
