The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has notified that 23000 Income Tax Returns (ITRs) have already been filed since April 1, 2024, which is the beginning of the New Financial Year.

Recently, CBDT released the functionalities to file commonly used ITRs which made it easier for taxpayers to file their Income Tax Returns. Enabling of Filing ITR started from the first day of the new financial year, i.e., 1st April 2024. This early start to the filing process, which is accessible through the Income Tax Department’s e-filing platform, aims to improve compliance and taxpayer services.

The Income Tax Department has made available e-filing versions of the ITR-1, ITR-2, and ITR-4 forms for the financial year 2023-24 (assessment year 2024-25). Furthermore, the department is providing downloadable utilities in Excel and JSON formats for ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-4, and even ITR-6 for FY 2023-24 (AY 2024-25) for individuals who want to file returns offline. CBDT noted that the facility to file ITRs 3, 5 and 7 will be made available shortly.

Taxpayers can file ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-4, and ITR-6 forms, but they should wait until their TDS information is fully updated on their 26AS, AIS, and TIS statements.

The last date to file income tax returns (ITRs) for FY 2023-24 (AY 2024-25) is July 31, 2024.
