The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) under the Government of India has released the Monthly Information Bulletin of January 2024 Edition.

Overview of the Corporate Sector

A total number of 26,28,865 companies were registered in the country as on 31st January 2024, of which 63% (16,65,438) companies stand active. There is an increase of 0.15% in the total proportion of active companies w.r.t registered companies when compared to December 2023.

Private limited companies account for 96% of the total companies with 37% of the total Paid-up Capital. In comparison, Public Limited companies are smaller in number (4%) but comprise 63% of the total Paid-up Capital.

Economic Sector-wise classification (NIC-2004) reveals that Business Services have the highest number of Active companies (28%) followed by Manufacturing (20%), Trading (13%) and Community, Personal and Social Services (11%). It is also observed that the Service Sector saw the maximum increase in the total number of Active Companies, followed by the Industry Sector and Agriculture Sector. In the Service Sector, Community, personal & Social Services Sector showed the maximum rise in the number of Active Companies.

Amongst the 37 States/UT, Maharashtra (19%) continues to be the state with the highest number of Active Companies, followed by Delhi (14%) and West Bengal (9%). An increase in the number of Active Companies is witnessed in the states of Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi as compared to December 2023. Among the Union territories, Jammu & Kashmir showed a rise of 119 number of companies in contrast to December 2023.

New Registration in January 2024

New Registration of Companies

A total of 14,327 companies were registered with a collective Paid-up Capital of Rs. 1,133.96 Crore. Out of the total new registrations, 14,204 companies were registered as Companies Limited by Shares with a Paid-Up Capital of Rs. 1,133.82 Crore and 123 companies were registered as Companies Limited by Guarantee.

Economic-activity-wise classification of new companies registered reveals that the predominant share of companies is in Community, personal & Social Services (27%) followed by Trading, Manufacturing and Business Services (15%).

State/UT-Wise Analysis of newly registered companies shows that the top three states that received the highest number of new registrations during January 2024 were Maharashtra with 18% which amounts to 2,615 corporates, Uttar Pradesh with 11% coming in at 1,572 and Delhi following closely behind at 9% belonging to 1,312 companies with a collective paid-up capital of Rs. 349.62 crores.
