GST Alert: 56th Council Meeting could get further delayed As per the news sources, the GST Council meeting which was slated to meet in June, could get further delayed and will likely to happen during or post the monsoon session. GST Council last met in December 2024. The formal date of the 56th GST Council meeting has not been announced yet.

The upcoming GST Council meeting has heavy agenda pending to be discussed including significant GST Rate Rationalization and the future of the compensation cess. Originally introduced to help states cover revenue shortfalls after the launch of GST, the cess may continue beyond its planned timeline. Possible removal of 12% GST slab and Clarification on GST treatment of intermediary services are also important issues pending to be discussed. Taxpayers and businesses are also looking forward to an update on the setting up of the GST Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT). Currently, one has to go to High Courts for appeals because the tribunal has not yet started operations.
